Marketplace Ownership

Published by Jason Rogalski on November 20, 2023

As Uncle Ben told Peter Parker: "With great power comes great responsibility". Now I know that we all aren't Spiderman (or maybe you are?), but the same can be said about a Marketplace Owner.

As a Marketplace Owner, you are the sole user that has total control.
This includes:

  • All Admin Rights

  • Full Data Access

  • Ability to DELETE the Marketplace

This owner might not be the user responsible for managing the various marketplaces, which is why they also have the ability to invite other contributors with varying levels of access.

With this in mind, it's important to choose who will be the initial owner. This should be someone that accepts the responsibility, but also someone who is a mainstay within the project. Our recommendation is that the owner should always be somebody from the customer account. If you are working with a partner to build out the marketplace, that is great, you can always add them as a contributor to the marketplace. We have seen many examples where a partner was designated as the owner, and either the contract is up, or the relationship ended, leaving the marketplace without an active owner. This is an issue, since the owner is the only user that can assign a new owner. This problem can also occur if a current owner is no longer employed with the customer.

Please keep these points in mind when choosing an initial owner; and if by chance a new owner needs to be selected, make sure that transfer is made while the current owner has access to their portal account.
